In Roman mythology, the faun is a mythical figure often associated with woods, nature, and pastoral life. These beings are described as half-man and half-goat, with the ears, legs, and sometimes the horns of a goat. Fauns are known for their playful spirit and their love for music, especially the Pan flute, which they play while dancing in the woods.
Fauns are similar to the satyrs of Greek mythology, and over time, the two figures have often been assimilated. They are considered protectors of nature, vital spirits of the woods and countryside, and are often also associated with fertility.
In Greek and Roman mythology, a nymph is a female nature deity typically associated with a particular location or landform. Different from goddesses, they are generally regarded as divine spirits who animate nature, and are often depicted as beautiful, young nubile maidens who love to dance and sing. Their amorous freedom sets them apart from the restricted and chaste wives and daughters of the Greek polis.
