Menelaus is a figure from Greek mythology, best known as a king of Sparta and a central character in Homer's epic poem, "The Iliad." He was the husband of Helen, whose abduction by Paris of Troy led to the Trojan War. Menelaus is often depicted as a formidable warrior and a key figure in the Greek coalition against Troy. His role in the war and his efforts to recover Helen are crucial elements of the story. After the fall of Troy, Menelaus regained Helen and returned to Sparta, where they are said to have lived together again. His character is sometimes seen as overshadowed by more prominent heroes like Achilles and Odysseus, but he remains a significant figure in Greek mythology and literature.
