The Roman Emperor was the supreme leader of the Roman Empire, a form of government that followed the Roman Republic. The institution of the emperor began with Augustus, who became the first Roman emperor in 27 BC. and ended in 476 AD. with the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
Roman emperors had absolute power and their role was often hereditary or obtained through military conquest. Some of the best-known emperors include Julius Caesar, Augustus, Trajan, Marcus Aurelius, and Constantine, to name a few.
The Roman emperor had control of the armed forces, executive power and often also a symbolic and religious role. The position of the emperor was fundamental to the stability of the Roman Empire, but over the centuries, there were periods of crisis and decline that led to the division and fall of the Western Roman Empire
